Yorkshire Junior Chess
Association, 2020-21
The YJCA’s annual series of Grand Prix tournaments, run by John
Hipshon, hitherto normally held over-the-board, were this season successfully
translated to the “on line” medium, specifically Lichess. Typically there
have been four over-the-board events per season, but this season the number
of events was stretched to five.
Numbers of individual participating have been down on previous
seasons, which should not be surprising for various reasons, but it is
noticeable that the level of continuity of participation into the on-line
events among the juniors (about 70%) has been much greater than among adults,
with whom only a minority have made that transition. This doubtless reflects
basic differences between youth and age.
Each player in a Grand Prix event earns “GP” points (3 x game
points scored on the event), which accumulate over all the events held, to
give a final overall Grand Prix total for each player. Obviously, the more
events you play in (as in “Events” column below, right), the more GP points
you stand to earn.
Event 5 was played on 27/02/2021, and the results in the three
sections are shown below, on the left. Results of the previous events can be
found on the YJCA website.
Final placings in the Grand Prix are shown below, on the right. Somewhat
aptly, the Lichess “handle” of the Grand Prix winner is “varunisthebest”!
