03/01/2021 British On Line Blitz Championships (result of Championship play-off awaited)
The British On-Line Championships ran from 21/12/2020 to 03/01/2021, with 24/25/26th December being rest days to allow for Christmas, and 31st December and 1st January similarly reserved for New-Year. Play was on the Chess.com website. Results can be found via http://chess-results.com/tnr543516.aspx?lan=1. Games should be available to play through on-screen via https://www.chess.com/events/2020-british-online-championship, and a small number of games will probably be added to this website later. Winners in each section, and results of Yorkshire players participating are given below.
This was a laudable and admirable effort on the part of the organisers, though it is interesting and significant that the take-up among the top players was limited. Assuming over-the-board chess returns, it will be interesting to see whether such an on-line event continues in parallel with the conventional o-t-b event. The costs of running on-line chess are presumably significantly less than the usual o-t-b equivalent. Yorkshire’s Phill Beckett has been serving a zoom arbiter in the Open Championship.
A significant number of listed entrants seemingly did not participate, suggesting there may have been technical problems encountered by some would-be participants, while there were more mid-event drop-outs than would be encountered in an o-t-b event, which is presumably inevitable, as dropping out is easier and more practical in on-line events than in o-t-b events when you have accommodation booked or are relying on a friend for transport back home. Also, initially there were no entrants advertised on Chess.com for the Women’s, Over-50 and Over-65 Rapidplay events, and one suspects there was a last-minute drive to drum up entries in order to make them take place.
Trophies and medals are expected to be awarded in most if not all sections, and various commercial organisations have donated non-monetary prizes of one sort or another. There appear to have been no monetary prizes being advertised. Winners in each section, and results of Yorkshire players participating, were as follows:
