30/12/2020

British On Line Blitz Championship

Gawain Jones, who is not playing in the long-play British Open On-Line Championship, has now won the 9-round 20-player Blitz Championship.  All rounds were played on 30/12/2020.  The rate of play was 3 minutes for the game with 2 seconds added per move.

Jones scored a “perfect” 9 out of 9, but almost as impressive, in view of his age (64), was the second place achieved by Jonathan Speelman, who scored 7 out of 9, losing to Jones, drawing with 65-year-old John Nunn (who finished 4th to 7th equal on 5 out of 9), and taking a last-round draw against Ameet Ghasi (3rd on 5½).

Both Jones and Speelman were assured of their respective final 1st and 2nd places with a round to spare.
