Round 6 >

ECF On-Line Championships, Group Stage, Group A, Round 5

Raising the requisite 12 players proved too difficult for Yorkshire, perhaps in part due to the match following on only a week after the previous one.  On the basis of grades, the predicted score on the top 10 boards would have been 4-6.  In the event it was 3-7, which with the two defaulted boards made the final score 3-9 in Lincolnshire’s favour.  Strength in the middle order was what counted most in favour of Lincolnshire.

Once again the opposition was headed by a GM, this time in the form of Matthew Turner, who was born and raised in Scunthorpe.  Past or present Sheffield players appearing for Lincolnshire were ex-Sheffield University Paul Cumbers who was resident in Sheffield for a long time, and Sheffield Nomads’ current member Samuel Milson, both Lincolnshire-born.

The final round of the Group Stage is to be in another week’s time, on 01/08/2020, when Yorkshire is due to meet Leicestershire, against whom Yorkshire have a decent chance of winning – provided they have 12 players!
