NORTHERN COUNTIES CHESS UNION

UNDER 160 GRADE COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP 2016-2017

YORKSHIRE v LANCASHIRE

By David G. Mills

The ‘Open’ and ‘under 160’ grade 2016/2017 Northern Counties Chess Union matches between Yorkshire and Lancashire were staged on 26th March 2017 at the Latvian Club, Bradford. Just the White and Red Rose Counties contest the ‘Open’ event, the winner taking the N.C.C.U. Championship Trophy plus a theoretically easier path to the National Final. At under 160 level, Yorkshire had lost 6˝-5˝ to Cumbria on 26th February 2017, but as the victors do not enter the national stages, the under 160 Roses Match winner would also have a theoretically easier route to the National Final.

I was scheduled as reserve/reporter/photographer for the under 160 team, but on checking my e-mails around Saturday midnight, saw a message from Rupert Jones advising me to be prepared to play. As the clocks were due to go forward at 2.00 AM this was 12 hours’ notice, but it did not perturb me. I had prepared psychologically to play as a coping mechanism and a game for Yorkshire at whatever level and in whatever sport should be sufficient motivation.

Several members of the Lancashire teams were present when I arrived on Sunday morning at 11.45 AM. In the absence of other Yorkshire players, I was given access to the ground floor room usually used for Yorkshire League fixtures and started setting up the equipment for the under 160 grade match. This completed, I joined other Yorkshire players to prepare the large upstairs room for the ‘Open’ match.

Play in the under 160 grade fixture commenced promptly at 1.00 PM, however there was a 15 minute delay upstairs. Consequently, I was unable to take photographs of games there ‘in play’ and had limited opportunity to view how the contest was progressing. The Yorkshire under 160 grade team appeared likely victors from a fairly early stage and this proved to be the case. Our opponents secured a few points after we had passed the winning post to reduce the margin of victory.

There were only three decisive results in the ‘Open’ event, all registered by Yorkshire. I did not find this surprising as everyone involved does their utmost for the respective teams. These occasions are an excellent opportunity to meet up with friends in my own and opposing teams. Whilst captaining the national Civil Service team, I have been able to select many players from both Lancashire and Yorkshire.
